Inventory Content Removal Operations

Overview

Content owners and bookshops can remove content from the marketplace and their inventory in two different ways. Understanding the difference between withdrawal and deletion is essential for managing content availability and distribution.

Business Rules

Publica.la respects the rights of end-users who purchased content. Therefore, all removal operations ensure that customers who already own content maintain access regardless of inventory changes.

Removal Operations Explained

Withdrawal (Temporary Removal)

Withdrawal temporarily removes content from store sales while preserving the ability to reactivate it later.

When to Use Withdrawal

  • Temporary unavailability (seasonal content, limited promotions)
  • Content review or quality issues that may be resolved
  • Testing purposes or promotional campaigns
  • When you might want to sell the content again in the future

Withdrawal Characteristics

  • Reversible: Content can be reactivated at any time
  • Data preservation: All sales history and metadata are maintained
  • Customer access: Existing customers retain full access to purchased content
  • Store visibility: Content disappears from store but remains in admin inventory with "Withdrawn" status

How Withdrawal Works

  1. Content is marked as withdrawn but remains in the system
  2. New sales are prevented immediately
  3. Existing customer access is unaffected
  4. Content can be reactivated through admin panel
  5. All historical data and relationships are preserved

Deletion (Permanent Removal)

Deletion permanently removes content from the bookshop's inventory and cannot be easily reversed.

When to Use Deletion

  • Permanent removal with no intention to sell again
  • Content licensing has expired permanently
  • Content is no longer relevant to your store
  • Compliance requirements for content removal

Deletion Characteristics

  • Permanent: Content removal cannot be easily reversed
  • Data archival: Content data is archived but not actively accessible
  • Customer access: Existing customers retain access to purchased content
  • Store visibility: Content completely disappears from both store and regular admin views
  • Re-addition: If needed again, content must be re-taken from marketplace

How Deletion Works

  1. Content is permanently marked as deleted
  2. New sales are prevented immediately
  3. Existing customer access is unaffected
  4. Content disappears from admin inventory
  5. To sell again, content must be re-acquired from marketplace

Best Practices

Choose Withdrawal When:

  • You're unsure about permanent removal
  • Content might return to your catalog
  • You want to maintain sales history visibility
  • Testing or promotional purposes

Choose Deletion When:

  • You're certain content won't return
  • Cleaning up outdated inventory
  • Content licensing has permanently expired
  • Compliance or legal requirements
Important Considerations
  • Customer Impact: Neither operation affects customers who already purchased the content
  • Reporting: Withdrawn content maintains reporting history; deleted content archives reports
  • Marketplace Changes: If the original content owner withdraws from marketplace, this affects all bookshops regardless of individual removal choices
